Enter a, b and c for ax² + bx + c = 0. Real repeated roots and complex roots are both shown with the discriminant.
About this tool
Enter the coefficients a, b and c of ax² + bx + c = 0. The solver shows the discriminant, tells you whether the roots are real, repeated or complex, and gives their exact values.
How to use it
- 01
Enter coefficient a (it must not be zero).
- 02
Enter coefficients b and c.
- 03
Read the discriminant and the roots x₁ and x₂.
Frequently asked questions
What does the discriminant tell me?
D = b² − 4ac. If D > 0 there are two real roots, if D = 0 one repeated root, and if D < 0 two complex roots.
Does it show complex roots?
Yes. When the discriminant is negative the roots are shown in the form p ± qi.
